Gross Motor in the Wild: Part 4 – Hill Power
The next time you're at the park, don't avoid the hill—use it!
Hills naturally challenge children's muscles in different ways depending on how they move.
Here are four fun ways to explore:
Walk up the hill: Strengthens the legs while giving the calf muscles a gentle stretch.
Crawl up the hill: Builds shoulder stability, core strength, and coordination while encouraging weight-bearing through the arms.
Walk sideways across the hill: Strengthens the hip muscles that help keep children stable during walking, running, jumping, and balancing.
Walk slowly down the hill: Challenges balance and builds eccentric muscle control, helping children develop the strength needed to safely control their movements, navigate stairs, land from jumps, and protect their knees during everyday activities.
Every hill becomes a full-body playground—and kids rarely realize they're getting an incredible workout.
That's a wrap on our Gross Motor in the Wild Summer Series! Remember, some of the best opportunities to build strength and confidence don't require fancy equipment—just the great outdoors and a little imagination.
