Gross Motor in the Wild: Part 3 – Curb Balance

That curb in the parking lot or along the sidewalk? It might just be nature's balance beam!

Walking carefully along a curb helps children develop balance, body awareness, coordination, and core strength. It also encourages children to slow down, focus, and make constant small adjustments to keep their bodies steady.

Try a few different challenges:

  • Walk forward heel-to-toe.

  • Walk sideways in both directions.

  • Walk backward (with close supervision).

  • Carry a small toy while balancing.

  • Freeze every few steps without stepping off.

Always stay close and choose a safe curb away from moving vehicles.

Balance skills are the foundation for activities like riding a bike, climbing playground equipment, participating in sports, and confidently navigating everyday environments.
