Flashback Wisdom: What a Messy AAC Device Taught Us About Real Progress

Sometimes our best lessons come from the beautiful messes along the way.

Recently, we found ourselves thinking back to a moment from 2022 that still resonates so strongly today. A parent returned one of our loaner AAC systems and immediately apologized for how messy it was. She explained that her daughter had taken it to OT, PT, and even used it during mealtime—so yes, it was a little sticky and covered in crumbs.

But do you know what we saw?

A win.
I saw a mom doing her absolute best to integrate AAC into her daughter’s busy, real-life routine. I told her with a smile, “Please don’t ever apologize for using it!” That mess meant she was modeling play, eat, and more—and that’s exactly what we hope for!

Three Takeaways That Still Matter:

This flashback reminds us of a few timeless truths when it comes to supporting AAC use at home:

1. Always Have It Available

That parent nailed it. The device wasn’t just sitting on a shelf—it was part of their day, through therapy, meals, and everywhere in between. The more available it is, the more natural communication becomes. Keep it nearby, even when it feels inconvenient.

2. Model, Model, Model

Even if your child doesn’t immediately use the device independently, your modeling makes a difference. This mom modeled without needing perfection—she just did it. That’s powerful. Show the language. Build the familiarity.

3. Find Everyday Opportunities

AAC doesn’t need a formal schedule. You can embed it into routines that already exist. Ask yourself:

  • What’s one routine we can start with today?

  • What’s another we might try next week?

Some great starting points:

  • Outdoor play

  • Reading books

  • TV or movie time

  • Floor play

  • Mealtime

The Lesson That Still Stands: Just Use It.

Don’t overthink it. Don’t worry about being perfect. Life is full and often messy—but if you’re doing your best, that’s more than enough. That mom from 2022? She wasn’t failing; she was making progress in the most meaningful way.

So here’s your friendly flashback reminder:
Keep it going. Keep showing up. Keep modeling. The best is all we can do—and it’s always worth celebrating. 💬✨
