3 Back-to-School Tips for Parents of AAC Users

The back-to-school season is just around the corner! For families of children who use AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), this transition can come with a few extra steps—but with a little planning, it can be a smooth and exciting start to the year.

Here are three simple, practical tips to help your AAC user feel confident, connected, and ready to shine in the classroom:

1. Send a No-Tech Communication Board to School

While your child’s high-tech AAC device may be their primary mode of communication, having a low-tech backup is essential. A printed communication board can come in handy during outdoor play, water activities, or moments when the device isn’t accessible. It ensures your child always has a voice—no matter where they are.

2. Involve Your Child in Packing Their AAC

Make your child’s AAC device part of their daily routine. Have them help pack it in their backpack, carry it themselves, or check that it’s charged and ready to go. These small habits promote independence and teach important operational skills—like responsibility for their communication tools.

Over time, this helps your child feel empowered and confident in using their AAC throughout the school day.

3. Add a Personal Touch—Label the Device

Just like jackets, lunchboxes, or water bottles, AAC devices can sometimes get misplaced. A simple label with your child’s name, classroom number, or even a favorite sticker can make a big difference. It not only helps others return the device quickly if lost, but it also adds a personal, fun touch your child will love.

You can personalize your child’s AAC device by adding their name or picture to the lock screen and home screen. Simply go to Settings → Wallpaper → Choose a New Wallpaper, select a photo featuring their name or image, and set it as both the Lock Screen and Home Screen. This makes the device easy to identify and uniquely theirs!

A Confident Start to the School Year

With just a few intentional steps, you can help set your AAC user up for a successful and empowered school year. Remember: communication doesn’t stop at the classroom door—it follows your child wherever they go. Let's make sure their voice is ready to go with them!
