Auditory Processing Disorder

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) at Elevate Health Audiology

Helping children listen, learn, and connect with confidence.

At Elevate Health, we understand that hearing is more than just detecting sound — it’s about understanding and making sense of what you hear.
Children and adults with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) can hear sounds normally, but their brains have difficulty processing or interpreting them accurately. This can make listening, learning, and communicating more challenging — especially in noisy environments like classrooms.

Our Audiology team provides comprehensive evaluation, management, and support for individuals with APD, working closely with families, speech-language pathologists, and schools to create meaningful change where it matters most.

What Is Auditory Processing Disorder?

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), sometimes called Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD), affects how the brain processes and understands sounds — particularly speech.

A child with APD might:

  • Have trouble following directions, especially in background noise

  • Frequently ask “What?” or “Huh?” even though hearing tests are normal

  • Struggle to hear differences between similar sounds or words

  • Find it hard to focus or understand conversation in noisy settings

  • Appear distracted, inattentive, or “tuned out” in group settings

These challenges are often most noticeable at school, during conversations, or when learning new information through listening.

Our Collaborative Approach

At Elevate Health, we believe successful APD care is built on teamwork.

Our audiologist works closely with our in-house Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) to ensure every child receives consistent, coordinated support. Together, we develop individualized plans that target both listening skills and language comprehension.

We also collaborate directly with schools to help teachers and support staff understand your child’s needs and implement classroom accommodations.

When appropriate, we recommend and fit FM/DM technology systems — specialized classroom amplification tools that help children hear the teacher’s voice more clearly over background noise, improving focus and comprehension.

Our APD Services Include:

  • Comprehensive Auditory Processing Evaluations

  • Detailed reports with school and home recommendations

  • Collaborative Speech-Language Therapy support

  • Environmental and classroom accommodations guidance

  • FM/DM system fitting, setup, and training

  • Ongoing monitoring and follow-up care
